The Jucuapa Occidental bridge project is located in the small community of Jucuapo Occidental. This farming community of roughly 200 people is located about 14km south west of Matagalpa, Nicaragua. The need for a bridge there was urgent. During the months of September and October, the river running through the community floods, terminating transportation for weeks on end. This flooding put the entire community in a position of complete isolation. These periods of isolation prevented kids from getting to the primary school. After the regular rhythm of schooling was disrupted, the majority of kids would just stop going altogether. Another more severe problem was the limitation of access to proper medical care. In the months when the river is high, many of the elders who became sick simply could not make it into town for medical care. Our bridge helped alleviate these issues!
